Interlude and World Wide Pillow Fight Club 2.0
For those that live with housemates, here's a decent Weekly Housecleaning Chore List (Microsoft Word 2004 for Macs Template). Dang it, I can't directly link to it. It's called "Housekeeping: Weekly" and you should be able to find it through this link.
And I'm going to check out this "World Wide Pillow Fight Club 2.0 (Fluffier and more Poofy)" flash mob event tomorrow.
I've been really down about certain stuff in my life lately, so haven't felt that inspired to write.

Depression and Traditional Chinese Medicine (Part 1)
I'll post about the StudentCare network another time, but it suffices to say that the system rocks for money-strapped college students who want to find medical providers who open their doors to such students. Despite my early entry to the full-time work force a while back, I sometimes feel like I am thrashing around in the space between a kid in the world (untraveled; reluctant to take big risks in terms of reshaping my life) and a huppie (half-yuppie, half-hippie).
Dag nammit, I thought I was slightly clever in making that up on the spot but apparently Urban Dictionary already has "huppie" logged. Fine, I'm also a punk and a nerd so, add that in there. Punehuppie? Hupunerd? Ooh, I like hupunerd! Right, so... back to the topic: Traditional Chinese Medicine.
For those of you who like linky-dinks, this is Wikipedia's entry on Traditional Chinese Medicine. Damn, Wikipedia is making me lazy. Moving on. If you know me, you probably know that I am depressed and if it's not obvious, you have not hung out with me enough. It will strike at very inopportune times. If you happen to also suffer from depression - and I mean the soul-in-the-gutter type depression - boy do I have some links for you. Prod me a little to post those in the future. Ok, refocus. A couple weeks ago I was poking around the Google links to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM from now on) and its typical conception and treatment of depression and insomnia. Oh, and I have a bunch of stuff about insomnia too.
A few weeks ago I read and bookmarked a short article called "Depression and the Five Elements" which began my interest in TCM and depression. Even if you think the categories are bollocks, the article should not piss you off too much. Personally, I'm not too keen on the elemental correspondences to physical characteristics like body shape and hair colour but I do find the grouping of personality traits worth contemplation. This really reminded me of the four humours stuff that I briefly learned about in my psychology undergrad degree. This stuff is pretty interesting too: Wikipedia entry on the four humours/ temperaments; a more colourful intro to the four humours; piqued your interest? here's more recent work on the five temperaments compliments of Wikipedia; and lastly the Wikipedia entry on classical elements which ties nicely into the "Depression and the Five Elements" article.
I will now say that my first experiences with Traditional Chinese Medicine were nothing like that article suggested.
But... you'll have to wait for tomorrow for me to recount this and link and stuff because it's bed time. And with my kind of insomnia, it's a blessing to actually feel drowsy at this time of night.
Perhaps it's partially due to the treatment I have been receiving. That would be so unbelievably wonderful. And I bought some used science fiction books today as a reward for getting started again with my school work. That's another topic I should briefly blog about: my reviews of the used book stores in Kitsilano. Which is where I live, if you didn't know that already. It's a neighbourhood in Vancouver, BC. Canada. With the mooses.

For the nerds and geeks out there
If you are reading my blog, chances are you are a geek or nerd... well because most of my friends fall into those categories (I should post on what's the difference between nerds and dorks). Also, if you stumbled across my blog, it was probably for some nerdular related post.
If you play MMORPGs (Massively Multi-player Online Role Playing Games), you might find this project of interest:
The Daedalus Project: The Psychology of MMORPGs
Some tidbits:The Trouble with "Addiction"
The word "addiction" carries with it a great deal of cultural baggage, and deciding whether a novel behavior tied to a novel technology is an "addiction" is anything but a simple matter. And simplistic news reports on the issue oftentimes make it even more difficult to understand the nature of the problem. But I think it is possible to articulate a sensible way of thinking about the issue by taking into account factors that are often not discussed at all.Dealing with Dilemmas
Crises and dilemmas occur a lot in MMOs. Did a player just ninja-loot an item or was it an accident? Should a Priest be allowed to roll for a Warlock set piece? See how players reacted to 3 dilemma scenarios and whether the player's age and gender made a difference. If you are into photography/ digital images and design, here's an interesting website from a UK company:

In this workshop you will be introduced to some of the foundational concepts informing the practice of “getting things done” and the ways in which you can apply this do–it–yourself thinking to your research plan in order to increase productivity. You will learn how to provide active context to, and realistically track, the demands of your work through practical, hands–on exercises.
Additionally, we will overview a selection of free, online personal information management systems as well as offline tools and strategies that you might use to help effectively manage and aggregate the complex tasks associated with researching, writing, and completing your dissertation or thesis.

Stand Up for Mental Health Shows
As some of you know, I am enrolled in a stand-up comedy course for people with mental illnesses called Stand Up for Mental Health. Well, we have three shows coming up that I'd love if you could attend: Wed. April 4, Fri. April 13, and Sun. April 15.
Here's the link to our Stand Up for Mental Health show schedule
The first two shows are free but we will be less polished. Our first show might be especially funny in terms of us messing up! The second show allows you to kick back with coffee and treats while you giggle with us as we continue to work on our acts. The third show at Granville Island will have a professional comic headlining and raffles and auctions and stuff, so even if you have seen us at the free shows, there is still good reason to attend!
And here's the link to buy tickets for the Granville Island show on Sunday April 15
Yah, I know it's a bit expensive at $28.00 (plus service charge). I wanted our class to offer tickets at a lower student rate but I guess it's complicated with Ticketmaster. If you want to go to the Granville Island show and can't afford the ticket price, I have access to some discounted tickets... but you have to buy them through me and there's a limited amount. I think it's like $15 or so, but I will find out for sure tomorrow when I get them.
Oh and if you want to donate (ha ha, like we grad students have extra money to throw around), or if you know someone who would like to donate moolah or items to the raffle/ auction thingermabob, have them contact [this person, for whom I will get the info tomorrow if it differs from this donation information].
The Stand Up for Mental Health course is gaining in notoriety each year and supporting it not only helps us, but helps your business or enterprise through advertisement at a community event with a diverse audience. There's even going to be a documentary on Stand Up for Mental Health called "Cracking Up" airing on CBC's The Passionate Eye this year (it was delayed due to some reason or other). If you are so inclined to read on, here is more media info on Stand Up for Mental Health.
By the way, I wrote that above paragraph myself. It's not like a press release that we're supposed to say. I do think Stand Up for Mental Health is a unique and beneficial program, and I hope others get involved so it can keep going.
And now I have to get back to editing and practicing my act. Which I haven't been able to do a lot of work on since I have been sick for a week. Bad flu. Go away now. Shoo!

I find your lack of pants disturbing
"In his pants you will find a new definition of pain and suffering."
These are just some of the IM away-messsage worthy quotes from Top 266 Star Wars Lines Improved By Replacing A Word With "Pants", which I found a while back on Fark.com.
I could do an entire post on my love-hate relationship with Fark, but I will let it be for now. Let's just say, I came for the Photoshop contests, and stayed for the in-jokes. For those unaware of Fark, here is the Wikipedia entry.
Note: This was orginally part of another post, but I separated it out for easier locatability. That's not a word, is it?
Being a smart-ass cookie makes you feel better
Smartass Cookie T-Shirts
"Cool fortune cookie t-shirts for the smartass, cynic, misanthrope and flirt in all of us. These cookies bite back!"
Ok, for a long time my friends and I would add "in the sack" to fortunes from fortune cookies for strange, insightful, and often snort-inducing phrases of destiny. These designers got it right on the money with these T-shirts.
These are my favourites:
You have an ambitious nature and will make a name for yourself... in bed.
Now is the time to try something new... in bed.
You have the ability to touch many people... in bed.
One Horse Shy T-shirts and more
Political, Asian, Blasphemy, Cool, Lowbrow, Highbrow, Society, and Western categories
I found this website through CuteOverload.com and really took a liking to many of the designs. Also, this website spun off the Smartass Cookie T-Shirts. Cool!
Some of my personal choices:
Dun-na-na-nun-na, da-da! I say whippet, whippet good!
There's a 34% chance that you now have the Devo song stuck in your head.
Instructions for use:
1) Wait for someone to say "I give up, what?"
2) Scream "CHICKEN BUTT!"
3) Laugh and laugh and laugh.
Yes, I actually would do this. Most often with my friend Wesley.
For those, like me, that check the "other" box for racial categories, etc.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Fact Sheet on Influenza
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Q & A for influenza and how CDC tracks the flu
CDC - What is the difference between a cold and the flu?
KidsHealth information on the flu (I'm posting it because of the at-home care tips. Note that I edited the text to apply to the self and not to the care of another person).
- drink lots of fluids to prevent dehydration
- get plenty of sleep and take it easy
- take acetaminophen or ibuprofen to relieve fever and aches (but do not take aspirin unless your doctor instructs you to do so)
- wear layers, since the flu often makes you feel cold one minute and hot the next (wearing layers — like a T-shirt, sweatshirt, and robe — makes it easy to add or subtract clothes as needed)

Here's the second part: Cold fX. I thought I had seen this over-the-counter herbal supplement before in the U.S. but I could be mistaken. Anyways, it seems all the rage here in Vancouver, BC. Doing a simple Google search revealed these results:
COLD-fX Canadian Website
The company uses sports stars and hockey personality Don Cherry in its marketing. It seems like Don Cherry is quite the Canadian celebrity and I should watch him sometime just to get in on Canuck pop culture (I'm referring to the Canadian nickname, not the hockey team... and where did the term "Canuck" come from anyways? It makes me think of the sound beavers would make when they chewed on wood or the clack of two charging mooses' antlers. And mooses looks like Moses. And how come American hockey doesn't have a team called the "Yanks"?)
British Columbia Community Drug Utilization Program (BC CDUP) Review of Cold-fX
I understand almost everything I read in the review but that might just be my psychology background. Umm... it says that although the two studies were rigorous in design, they were flawed (which many studies are in some way) but mainly the company combined study results in a questionable manner to obtain the purported clinical evidence of effectiveness. This was the bottom line of the report:
There are no published trials to support the use of Cold-fX for the treatment [emphasis in document] of colds and flus. At this time, the data for prevention of colds and flu in seniors and adults is insufficient to recommend the routine use of Cold fX.Oh and wash your hands.
Now, this all seemed straight-forward to me. However, I found something at the end of the document that contradicts the Urban Legends Reference Page: Cold fX Warning
(Beware: this website, which I think is named Snopes.com - Rumor Has It, is highly addictive. Just click on the "random" button to get going. Two things annoyed me about this site: the pop-up ads and the fact that the random button brings up a story in a new window).
From BC CDUP report
(note that the PDF is password protected for copying (as in copy-paste) so I just looked at it and typed it):
Cold-fX CautionsNow the references of the BC CDUP report list two monographs that this information above could have come from. One of them is for ginseng and not Cold fX, which supports the conclusion in the Snopes.com commentary on Cold fX, which was quoted from the FAQs from the Cold-fX manufacturer. Anyways, I don't feel like researching it anymore. Too sicky.
endocrine: may have estrogenic effects, thus avoid in women with estogren sensitive conditions (breast cancer, uterine cancer, ovarian cancer, endometriosis, uterine fibroids)
Here are some other sources that help paint an inconclusive picture:
UBC professors question effectiveness of Cold-fX in the Calgary Herald
Health Canada approves Cold-fX's medical claims on CTV.ca
Alternative Remedies for the Flu on Intraspec.ca, which recommends Cold-fX
